There are a few schools of thought on vegetable fermentation. There are those who prefer an old-world method of fermenting vegetables in an open crock style, and there are others who prefer the “insurance” of an air-lock system for their pickles. And then, of course, there are many who utilize both methods.
No matter what your need or preference, we like to carry a variety of products to help you achieve your culturing goals. The Perfect Pickler is one of the many natural fermentation tools carried by CFH, along with kraut pounders, fermentation weights, and other airlock systems.
Today I thought we’d take a closer look at the Perfect Pickler.
If you’re not familiar with an airlock and its functionality, here is a good explanation:
Air and gasses created through fermentation escape through the water-filled airlock but new air cannot enter keeping your fermenting vegetables safe. Eliminates the need to open the container during fermentation to check on the vegetables or to remove scum and mold from the surface.
The Perfect Pickler isn’t just an airlock, it also comes with a few other items to aid you in your vegetable fermentation endeavors. Within the kit you’ll find a lid and grommet, s-style airlock, rubber gasket, spacer cup, 1/4 lb. Celtic sea salt, and instructions.
The biggest benefit I can see for this type of airlock system is the fact that it is useable atop any wide-mouth canning jar. So, whether you’re fermenting in pints, quarts, or half-gallons; the Perfect Pickler can be used right along with your canning jar stash.
I like to use it atop a half-gallon of kraut, which usually lasts our family a couple of weeks.
