Kefir Eggnog

Eggnog is one of my favorite things about the holidays, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to drink it for years because of the high sugar/preservative/chemical content of commercial eggnog. I recently started making milk kefir again, and I was finding myself overrun with the stuff, so I started looking for things to make with it.

I found this recipe on our site, and was intrigued. Could I really make eggnog from milk kefir without ending up with some horrible-tasting concoction that I’d just end up throwing away?

So I filled my blender with kefir, eggs, spices, and xylitol. I blended it for about thirty seconds, poured some into a glass, sprinkled some ground nutmeg on the top, and took a sip. Lo and behold, it was the most delicious eggnog I’ve ever tasted! It was sweet, creamy, and thick without being overly sugary. It had a faintly tart taste from the kefir that really added to the overall experience. Within twenty minutes, I had drunk the entire contents of my blender (don’t tell anyone!).

Luckily, I know I’m putting nothing but fresh, organic, wholesome food in my body with this recipe, so I’ll definitely be making more! Even if the holidays are over, it still makes a wonderful treat any day of the year.

Tip: If you really can’t stand milk kefir, you can try replacing it with buttermilk, piima, or viili.

    This is fantastic. I can’t wait to try it. I’m a big fan of eggnog, but stopped buying it because of all the additives and sugar.
